100 White Paper Puck Filters (49–58 mm)

Improve your espresso preparation with our white paper puck filters, available in diameters from 49 mm to 58 mm. These disposable, food-grade paper filter discs are designed to sit at the bottom of the portafilter basket, underneath the ground coffee.

Paper puck filters are increasingly used by home baristas and coffee professionals who want to reduce the movement of fine coffee particles into the basket holes, maintain a cleaner basket and support a more consistent espresso workflow.

Why Use a Paper Puck Filter?

During espresso extraction, very small coffee particles, often referred to as fines, can collect around or pass through the holes in the bottom of the portafilter basket. Placing a paper filter underneath the coffee puck creates a barrier between the ground coffee and the basket base.

This may help to:

  • Reduce the number of coffee fines entering or obstructing the basket holes.
  • Encourage more even water flow through the bottom of the coffee puck.
  • Produce a cleaner espresso with less fine sediment.
  • Keep the portafilter basket cleaner after extraction.
  • Make the used coffee puck easier to remove.
  • Support greater consistency between espresso shots.

Results will vary depending on the coffee, grinder, basket, dose and brewing method. Paper puck filters are an inexpensive way to experiment with espresso preparation and refine your extraction process.

Paper Puck Filters and Metal Puck Screens Are Different Products

Paper puck filters are sometimes confused with reusable metal puck screens, but they are normally used in different positions.

  • Paper puck filters are placed at the bottom of the basket, underneath the ground coffee.
  • Metal puck screens are normally placed on top of the coffee puck, beneath the espresso machine shower screen.

A bottom paper filter primarily separates the coffee from the basket holes, while a metal puck screen is generally used to help distribute incoming water and reduce coffee residue on the shower screen.

Choosing the Correct Diameter

Please measure the internal diameter at the bottom of your portafilter basket before ordering.

The nominal size of an espresso basket or portafilter, such as 51 mm, 53 mm, 54 mm or 58 mm, usually relates to the upper part of the basket where the tamper fits. It does not necessarily indicate the diameter at the bottom of the basket, where the paper filter is positioned.

Many espresso baskets taper towards the base. The internal bottom diameter can therefore be several millimetres smaller than the nominal basket size. It can also vary between different manufacturers, basket designs and basket depths.

For example, owning a 58 mm portafilter does not automatically mean that a 58 mm paper puck filter will fit the bottom of its basket.

Because of the number of different machines and replacement baskets available, the correct paper filter diameter cannot be reliably determined from the espresso machine make, model or nominal portafilter size alone. The customer is responsible for measuring the internal base of the basket and selecting the appropriate diameter.

How to Measure Your Basket

  1. Remove the basket from the portafilter if this makes it easier to measure.
  2. Measure the internal diameter across the flat bottom surface of the basket.
  3. Do not measure across the top opening or use the stated portafilter size.
  4. Select a paper filter that will lie flat against the basket base without folding up the sides.

The paper filter does not need to fit tightly against the basket wall. A filter that is slightly smaller than the measured base diameter can still lie flat and work effectively.

Available Diameters

Select your required size from the diameter menu. Available options are:

49 mm, 50 mm, 51 mm, 52 mm, 53 mm, 54 mm, 55 mm, 56 mm, 57 mm and 58 mm.

How to Use

  1. Ensure the portafilter basket is clean and dry.
  2. Place one paper puck filter flat on the bottom of the basket.
  3. Add the required amount of ground coffee.
  4. Distribute and tamp the coffee as normal.
  5. Insert the portafilter and brew your espresso.
  6. Dispose of the used paper filter after extraction.

Important Sizing Information

Compatibility is determined by the internal diameter at the bottom of the individual basket. We cannot confirm the correct size solely from an espresso machine brand, model, tamper size or stated portafilter diameter. Please measure your basket carefully before selecting an option.
